Content

Introduction 1

  • ... pray continually. Give thanks for whatever happens; for this is what God wills for you in Christ Jesus 1 Thes 5:17-18

Chapter 1 Prayer, God’s gift and initiative in our lives 7

  • Our God so desires to spend time with us, to speak to us, to listen to us. And he really listens to us.
  • The Gift of God
    • Every time we begin to pray to Jesus it is the Holy Spirit who draws us in the way of prayer (CCC 2670). In this sense, prayer is the gift of God's Holy Spirit.
  • The Initiative of God
    • At its basis, prayer is God's initiative in our lives. He comes to you.
    • The story of the Woman at the well demonstrates how Jesus took the initiative. God thirsts so that we may thirst for him (CCC 2560)
    • When we yield to God, to God's actions within us, it is then that we pray.
  • A Witness to Prayer
    • ... until your are convinced that prayer is the best use of your time, you will not find the time to pray.
    • Teach us O Lord the shortness of our days that we might live them with wisdom of heart. (Ps. 90)

Chapter 2 Old Testament models of prayer 15

  • God's Promise and the Prayer of Faith - Abraham and Jacob
    • Abraham practices intercessory prayer by asking God to spare Sodom and Gomorrah.
  • God's Initiative and Moses's Response
    • Ex 3:4-8, 10 Presents Moses's prayer with God. ...one of the primordial images of prayer in the spiritual tradition... God first calls Abraham and he responds simply "hear I am".
    • In genesis, we hear of Noah who "found favor with the Lord... for he walked with God (Gn 6:8,10) We can walk with God too. That is what prayer is. A Call to walk with God.
  • Moses's Prayer of Intercession
    • Moses dramatized the value of intercessory prayer as he vigorously begged God for mercy and guidance for the people making their journey to the promised land (CCC 2577)
  • The Prayer of the People of God - Samuel, David, and Solomon
    • Samuel's well-known response "speak Lord, your servant is listening" (1 SM 3:9)
    • For the people of God, the Temple was to be the place of their prayer... As Catholics, we find that the proper place for liturgical prayer is the Church, the successor to the Temple, the house of God.
  • The Prayer of the Assembly - The Psalms
    • ...the Psalms the masterwork of prayer in the Old Testament (CCC 2585)
